Classical guitar tremolo technique: reconsider your limitations
March 31, 2007
During a recent yoga class, the instructor asked us to turn our attention to our feet. After some gentle massage (to promote circulation) and light stretching of the feet and toes, she suggested that we should be able to use our toes like our fingers. She gave examples of people who have learned to type with their toes. She even showed us her dexterity with her toes. She could lift and move individual toes without recruiting the others in the process. If that doesn’t sound too impressive, try it yourself. She indicated that through massage and conscious effort one could do the same. If others can gain such dexterity with their toes, maybe we should reconsider the limitations we put on our fingers.

Consider other tremolo pieces as a way to approach Recuerdos
March 23, 2007
Recuerdos de la Alhambra can prove difficult to tackle because of its endurance requirements. You’re looking at about 6-7 minutes of nonstop tremolo. Such a long piece on a challenging technique can prove intimidating. You may want to consider a piece that employs the tremolo on a much smaller scaler. Consider, for example, Jorge Morel’s Misionera. It has a couple tremolo passages that can help you build your chops and allow you to work up to a piece like Recuerdos. Plus the piece just downright rocks!

Recuerdos and tremolo check in
March 15, 2007
I’m here. Just been busy getting ready for a performance coming up soon. I have had time to continue working on my tremolo technique and my latest thought concerns snapping your fingers. How does it feel to snap your fingers using your thumb and ring finger? Maybe even snap the ring and let the thumb run across the middle and index fingers as well. Notice how all the fingers and the thumb work together towards making this one fluid motion. Would a tremolo technique similar to this be beneficial? Not sure, but I’ll continue to work on it and report more later.
Want to learn Recuerdos and the tremolo, you’ll need a metronome
March 8, 2007
I probably should have mentioned this early on, and I may have. If you want to get anywhere learning the tremolo and/or Recuerdos de la Alhambra then you will need a metronome from the very get-go.
Matrix MR-800 Quartz metronome
This is the one that I use. It has a nice, pleasing sound, LED pendulum motion that highlights downbeat, headset jack, volume control, and a built in tuner.
For something a little more portable, try the flying saucer metronome.
It has a nice sound and built in tuner.
